If you’re not on more than one social network today as a college student or post grad, it’s a rarity. From Facebook to Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+, all social media outlets have given us the opportunity to share our beliefs, likes and dislikes with not just our “friends,” and connections, but also anyone and everyone with access to the world wide web. Sure, it’s easy and free to sign up for social networks, so often times we think, the more sites we submit our information to the better for networking, it can’t hurt right? Well, right and wrong actually. Social media can be used as a great networking tool if used appropriately. The best thing you can do for yourself when you do join online networks like Facebook and Twitter is to think twice before you post…anything, we’re talking status updates, pictures, pages you like, etc.

When you’re in the market for a job (and if you’re in college, you’re still in the market for a job because you’re goal coming out of college is to of course, get hired through a great company), you’ll want to start thinking like an employer. Take a look at your Facebook profile right now, if you were a CEO or even a human resources professional at a company, would you hire you? Check your privacy settings on Facebook as the new “timeline” interface rolls out to make sure you’re not over sharing information with your connections. Clean it up and be smart about what you post. This also goes for Twitter, LinkedIn and your blog (if you have one).

Let’s discuss LinkedIn a little more since it’s an awesome tool for networking when utilized correctly in order to highlight your work experience and as a result, creating an attractive profile for employers and other people to connect with you. A LinkedIn profile is a must for any college student (graduates especially) so that they can network and create a virtual resume for employers and friends to access. LinkedIn is a social network that you really want to get right. Feel free to connect with former employers and professionals you find in the field that interests you the most. Don’t be discouraged if someone does not accept your invitation either – they may have their own set of privacy rules when it comes to their profile too. Regardless, you’ll want to include all of your relevant work experience on your profile and don’t hesitate to ask professors, counselors, former employers (especially internships) for recommendations on your past performances.

Join groups and follow companies on LinkedIn that parallel the industry you are the most interested in. You will be able to join conversations and receive updates from people in the industry who have the experience you are looking to also have one day. A LinkedIn don’t? Don’t overdo your status updates, I almost recommend to not have your LinkedIn account connected to Twitter, especially for serial tweeters, most of the people on LinkedIn are not interested in what you had for lunch today or the band you saw last night – know your audience! The average LinkedIn user has about 145 connections, so you can see why constant updates from your profile could be a bit over the top for some.

While it’s easy to get caught up in all that social media has to offer, remember that you’re looking to make a positive impression on employers, because trust me, they’re looking at every network you’re on. To see how you can use social media for online networking to help you find a career you’re interested in, check out this Fox Business article. Don’t forget to think like an employer the next time you like, tweet or post an update.
